Cataloguing and Library Research Intern

The Woodman Foundation

"This program is part of the BIPOC Artists Endowed Foundation Initiative."

Please see instructions on how to apply at the bottom of this page.

The Woodman Family Foundation, based in New York City, stewards the artwork and legacies of three artists: Betty Woodman (1930 -2018), sculptor and ceramicist; Francesca Woodman (1958 –1981), photographer; and George Woodman (1932 -2017), painter and photographer. We maintain and oversee a substantial collection of artworks by each artist from all periods and media, organize museum and gallery exhibitions and publications of their work, and facilitate the placement of their works in public collections. We are in the process of cataloguing the extensive archives of each of the artists to create a study center open to scholars and curators and we make grants to support the arts.

Position Overview:

We seek a Cataloguing and Library Research Intern for Summer 2023. In this role, our intern will catalogue books, essays, and journals that include each of our three artists and track which works are reproduced in each text. This research will be incorporated in the publication histories of each of our artists, and the data will be connected to artworks in our database.

Intern Responsibilities:

  • This project also includes an accounting of our library of monographs on each of our artists, compiling a catalogue of titles and ensuring each book is included in our working library.

  • For both projects, our intern will also create digital content based on their research to be published on the Foundation’s website and social media.

  • Have the opportunity to write a short essay on an exhibition, work of art, or text that they found particularly meaningful through their research to be published on the Foundation’s website.

  • Our intern will report to our Collections Curator and Archivist.

  • They will attend weekly meetings with our staff where they will learn about the day-to-day operations of an artist endowed foundation.

  • They will have access to all members of our small team, gaining an understanding of the roles, responsibilities, and professional trajectories of each.

  • Our intern will also be included in various external meetings with museum curators, gallery representatives, book publishers and other organizations with whom we’re working on projects to provide an introduction to the larger art world and its different facets.

We will also be a member of an artist endowed foundation consortium in New York City that will provide opportunities to meet other interns in the field as well as visit other foundations and institutions around the city.
