The Helen Frankenthaler Foundation seeks an intern to assist with a major project documenting the Foundation’s collection of framed works on paper. This immersive, on-site internship will support an artwork photography project facilitated by the Collections department and the Helen Frankenthaler Catalogue Raisonné.

Intern Responsibilities:

  • The student will research and catalogue a selection of Frankenthaler's framed works on paper spanning six decades.

  • They will gain hands-on experience examining rarely seen artwork, images, and archival materials, and record the information obtained from their research in the Foundation’s database.

  • This work will contribute to the information published in the Catalogue Raisonné, which will be the defining publication of the artist’s legacy.

  • In the final weeks of their internship, the student will draw from their experience to curate a small display with archival materials from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation Archives and write a short article for the HFF newsletter.

  • Through the lens of a single project, the intern will collaborate with staff across the Foundation and develop a holistic understanding of the mission and work of a small arts organization while acquiring skills that will transfer into any future position in the arts.  

Requirements:

  • This position would be ideal for anyone curious about working in Collections, Image Management, an art research role, or a nonprofit arts organization.  

  • Attention to detail, willingness to learn how to handle framed artwork and archival material, high degree of discretion, interest in art and research.  

The intern will engage in project support work that may include but is not limited to: 

  • Collections: On-site examinations (art handling, measuring, and taking notes).  

  • Catalogue Raisonné: Artwork research and cataloguing metadata. 

  • Archives: Research in the photographic records, clippings, and library resources. Curate a vitrine display and write a short article for the HFF newsletter. 

  • Image management: Scanning, editing, and uploading image files and entering metadata in database. 

Hours per week: 28 hours (Monday–Thursday) 

Location: HFF office in Chelsea; collection storage facility in Bronx, NY 

Health and safety notice: please note that the intern will be subject to the Foundation’s COVID 19 policies and may be required to wear a mask while in the office, collection storage, and during site visits. 

The intern will also be required to sign a confidentiality agreement, employee handbook, and equipment agreement. 

Interns will work onsite 28 hours per week and attend a mandatory offsite program day one day per week with their cohort.

Interns must be available for the duration of the program.

INTERNSHIP DURATION:

  • Total Weeks: 9 weeks

  • Work Hours per Week: 28 

  • Total Hours: 252

  • Workdays: 4 days per week onsite

PROGRAM DAY:

  • On the 5th day of each week, interns will attend an offsite program day with their cohort.

  • These hours are separate from the internship hours.
