The Digitization & Cataloging Intern at Evergreen Museum & Library (Evergreen), part of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, will work directly with the registrar, assisting in the management of its historic photograph collection. The intern will spearhead the physical and intellectual control of a portion of the photograph collection through the digitization, documentation, and stabilization of approximately 500 stereographs.
This position provides an opportunity for an intern to engage in museum collection and information management and planning and workflow management all while supporting the museum’s mission by increasing staff and public accessibility to and knowledge of this historic collection.
The Digitization & Cataloging Intern Responsibilities:
Handle historic stereographs in accordance with museum standards;
Conduct and oversee digitization of stereographs using a flatbed scanner.
Create and edit high resolution digital master files (TIFF) and access/reference files (JPEG) overseeing and reviewing color corrections and sizing using Adobe Photoshop.
Consult and apply internal and external resources in quality descriptive metadata for new digitization.
Assign object ID’s and catalog each object, uploading resulting image and data to the museum collection management system, PastPerfect;
Research appropriate archival materials for long term storage, and rehouse the objects using selected materials in accordance with museum standards.
The Digitization & Cataloging Intern Details:
The ideal candidate will major in a facet of the arts, humanities, or museum studies and have an interest in archival and/or visual resource collections, information management and structured data, and /or museum registration or archives procedures and methods; The ability to perform repetitive tasks while maintaining a standard of accuracy and efficiency the project requires.

Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Training will be provided for all technical skills required for the internship, including best practices in handling archival objects, navigating and using the museum’s collection management system, cataloging and digitization procedures, and successful rehousing.
However, the candidate should be able to demonstrate familiarity with the basics of using a flatbed scanner (i.e. Epson Perfection V550), editing images using Adobe Photoshop, and uploading files to secondary software for data import.
The internship will be onsite at the museum.
Interns will work onsite 28 hours per week and attend a mandatory offsite program day one day per week with their cohort.
Interns must be available for the duration of the program.

PROGRAM DAY:
On the 5th day of each week, interns will attend an offsite program day with their cohort.
These hours are separate from the internship hours.
